Doll House Ending Explained, What's Happened In The End

The Story And Ending

He has lost his memory and doesn't remember who she is. This man is Rustin, and we go back in time to see him at the height of his infamy.

Rustin, who performs in a rock band, works hard and plays hard in equal measure, with a steady cocktail of alcohol and drugs to keep him going. When his friend Diego takes a turn for the worst, Rustin decides to make amends for the ills he caused and flies to Rotterdam to do so.

What's in the Netherlands you ask? No one has heard from him since. Unfortunately, Sheena passed away, leaving the caregiving duties to Bok and Rachelle. When Rustin shows up, he assumes a fake identity as Clyde to meet his daughter Yumi.

Rustin is 40 when we start the movie and he's a rocker with no family. He clearly feels unfulfilled, and when his friend Diego collapses the morning after a drug overdose, Rustin decides to change his life. Diego's words echo in his mind as he makes this decision. Diego's words were "People who are not ready to die have unfinished lives."

When Rachelle goes on a business trip and Rustin spends more time with little Yumi, he goes to her place and sees the project she's working on. Rustin isn't done with it yet, but he promises he can have it when he's done. This is a doll house.

This is symbolic of the home Rusty never lived in with Sheena, deciding to leave the family and leave everything empty and empty once full. Seeing the house in pieces is a great way to contextualize what happened when Rustin left it all to do drugs and play in his band.

Halfway through the film, Rachelle calls Bok and the secret is revealed during the video call. After saying goodnight to Yumi, the phone rings and Rustin is there. When Bok learns the truth, he confronts Rustin in the kitchen and reveals that he was never there for Yumi. During Sheena's pregnancy and Yumi's growing years, Rustin was absent. “You owe us this much. Don't meddle in her [Yumi's] life." Bok says.

Bok doesn't explain to Yumi why he can't see Rusty anymore, he objects to her not being able to see him. Of course, like a curious child, he walks up to Rusty unaware.

Despite his poor voice and talent for playing the keyboard, the pair escape Bok after he promises to take her to singing auditions. He is worried and just wants to look at the girl. Rustin calls her, says he made a promise to Bok, but then turns off his phone.

Rustin and Yumi have one last day together, before Rustin tells his daughter that this will be the last time they have fun. They stay at a hotel before school auditions.

Rustin Get Drink

Unfortunately, Rustin gets blind drunk when he sleeps and is starving in the morning and almost misses the show. They make it to the audition on time, but Yumi's singing isn't very good, but Rustin hears an angelic voice from her. As expected, Yumi is not selected for the school play, but she learns an important lesson about always trying no matter what.

Rustin suddenly starts throwing up, but apparently it's just a reaction to the alcohol he drank the night before.

Trouble ensues when Yumi, Rachelle, and Bok come to buy the dollhouse that Rusty promised the young girl. Rustin overdosed and was rushed to the hospital. The dollhouse inside looks finished and complete. Given Rusty's absence, they don't pick him up.

Rustin comes back to himself, gets a job and tries to see the girl again. But Rachelle is having none of it. Rustin visits Sheena's grave, confessing that he has wasted everything in his life. When he looks at Sheena, he apologizes for the hurt, admitting that it was love at first sight for him. He laments that he didn't try harder when he was alive.

Shortly after this incident, Bok and Rachelle leave to stay at another house. Rustin wakes up, but only temporarily. After returning to the Philippines, he begins to make amends, but relapses after his father dies. After playing a little too much at a show, Rustin collapses and suffers a stroke.
